In 2023, Momenta navigated a year of learning and growth marked by transformative changes. The departure of CEO Tania Wilson, who served for ten years, and the introduction of new CEO Shelley Blakey in May signified a strategic shift. Momenta used the leadership change to refine strategies, goals and our impact on our clients and the community. The year also witnessed the launch of two new 1:1 coaching programs and the pilot of a group coaching program, Work Confidence. As Momenta continues its dynamic journey, the commitment to our clients, coaching programmes, and quality service to its community remains steadfast.

We have had quite the year of growth and change in Momenta. An evolution in service model has been supported by a change in board and team members as well as relocation to a new office. Momenta continues to focus on connection to our community, building networks and relationships, driving awareness, and advocacy so that the people we are here to serve have optimal opportunities to go after a life they love.

We have led quite the year of growth for Momenta, from rebranding to moving into a new office space at The Kollective. We’ve had the privilege of speaking at a number of events and provided training and leadership development in the disability sector. We’re leading a community engagement consultation, have been nominated in several award categories as well as continuing to refine and improve the way in which we work alongside our clients.

On the 9th of June 1976, 15 founding members held the Inaugural meeting of Equality Bay of Plenty Incorporated. This was the day our organisation was born, and over the past 45 years, we have made many changes, adapted, and grown. We have updated our name several times, from Equality Bay of Plenty to Avalon and finally last year toMomenta.

What has remained constant and true throughout this time is the continued commitment we have to our community. Ensuring that our work creates opportunities for people with disabilities and neurodiversity, to achieve their aspirations and live a life they love.

At the same time the ongoing COVID-19 environment has meant that we have all had to adapt and learn to work in new ways; to be responsive and innovative. Throughout this time, we’ve kept the well-being of our clients at the forefront of our service response.

The 2019 – 2020 Financial year has been a year of two halves, significantly impacted by the global COVID-19 pandemic. The national level 4 lockdown brought with it uncertainty to staff and clients alike. As a lean and flexible organisation we have been able to adapt and respond quickly and efficiently to the new way of working and living, with the wellbeing of our clients being at the forefront of our service response.

Despite the uncertain environment that COVID-19 has created, the board and team have continued to focus on moving the organisation forward: to expand, innovate and future proof. This financial year has seen the rebrand of the trust, the creation of a Social Change Lead role and the development of a new business arm with a long term aim of securing a sustainable future, enabling us to continue to shape our community so all people, belong, are valued and thrive.
