After having a restful summer break the Momenta team have dived headfirst into a busy start to the 2022 year. Earlier this month we moved into our new office on 144 Fraser Street and the team are loving our new space. This will be a great environment to work from as we roll out a new way of working with clients in the next few months.

As the end of the 2021 fast approaches, the Momenta team has been reflecting on the past year, the successes and challenges for both our clients and ourselves, what have we learnt and what has grown in us.

The continuing COVID environment has unfortunately created disruption and in some instances the loss of opportunities and roles for some people.  This has meant that we have all had to learn to be flexible and adapt to work in new ways and to be responsive and innovative. Throughout this time, we’ve kept the wellbeing of our clients at the forefront of our service response and will continue to work alongside all of our clients.

Winter is here upon us, and we find ourselves in the middle of the year, reflecting on how we got here this fast!!

This month Momenta celebrates 45 years of working in our community, since our first inaugural meeting of Equality (Bay of Plenty) on the 9th of June 1976!   Over that time the organisation has grown and evolved rebranding as Avalon in 1985, then as Momenta in 2020.   We would like to thank and acknowledge our founding Rotarians, all of our previous board members, leadership, and staff whose shoulders we stand upon here today.

We will continue to keep engaged and informed regarding systems transformation and will update you as the infrastructure, workforce, and capability development progress in readiness for roll out over the next couple of years.

We are privileged at Momenta to have an amazing Board providing us with their enormous skills and expertise.  The board and leadership team are currently working on updating our strategic plan and workstream priorities over the next few years.

This will result in some new work and projects taking place soon that we will look forward to sharing as they come to fruition.

We are into Autumn already; can you believe how quickly our year is already flying by? I hope you enjoyed a restful Easter break, spending time with family, relaxing or listening to some wonderful Jazz music for all those based here in the beautiful Bay of Plenty.

The Momenta team is in full swing, particularly in our Springboard programme where we are working with young people in their last year of school, planning what comes next for them in 2022.

We are busy expanding too and have recently recruited for a new Community Connector.  We look forward to announcing our new team member to you very soon.

You may have seen the fantastic “The Hiring Chain” video sung by Sting, which has made the rounds on social media lately.   It is a great reminder that people with intellectual disabilities can do the job!! Although one in five working-age people in New Zealand has some form of disability, most have little or no barrier to working in some kind of paid employment given the right support.

Momenta is always looking to partner with employers in providing work experience for some of our young and talented people.  Please get in touch with us if you want to talk more about how you can provide an opportunity for someone to achieve such an important valued role!

Happy New Year! We hope you had a restful break over the Christmas period. The Momenta team are feeling refreshed after our summer holidays and have jumped back in with a busy start to 2021.

We are blessed in New Zealand to be enjoying our glorious summer to the full while other parts of the world are still under enormous pressure and struggling against COVID-19. The events of the past few weeks of having several community cases, however, come as a sharp reminder that we must not be complacent and remain vigilant. We have reviewed our 2020 COVID-19 service response and our team is ready to immediately respond and support our clients in the (what we hope is, unlikely,) event of a future lockdown.

Our focus in 2021 will be on deepening and refining what we do, as well as tapping into our creativity to work with people in different ways. We will build on the relationships made over this past year, furthering our partnerships and collaborations in order to provide a range of programmes and initiatives to support our clients to grow, learn, and reach their potential.

Each December the Momenta team take time to reflect on the year that has been. We ponder on a number of questions; What was achieved? What were we challenged by? What did we learn? And what is 2021 going to look like for us personally as well as an organisation. This always provides us with great insights, with opportunities to learn and improve.

2020 has been a year unlike any other, COVID 19 and the lockdowns that followed has shaped all our lives as individuals and as a community. For some, this time was and still is extremely challenging, for others it was an opportunity to look at living differently. Despite this difficult year, the Momenta team feel blessed and grateful to still be here, working alongside our clients, as they continue to move forward in achieving their goals and aspirations.

MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO

It has been six weeks since Momenta settled into our new home at The Kollective.The team is loving this vibrant space and it is great to be surrounded by progressive social sector, social and business enterprises.We are looking forward to showing off The Kollective as a workspace when we host the Chamber of Commerce BA5 in November.

2020 continues to move at pace, still with much to achieve as we head into the final quarter of the year.The rebrand to Momenta has been a great success and I have felt overwhelmed by the positive feedback and support shared with us over the past two months from across the community.

The Institute of Directors branch forum, Smarter Business Event, Chamber of  Commerce Business After 5, Westpac Tauranga Business Awards and The Western Bay of Plenty Disability Support Network forums are all events that Momenta is privileged to be a part of over the next short while.

In the coming weeks, we will welcome two new staff members and several new board members, bringing a new range of skills, expertise, and energy to the organisation and our clients.

We have recently established Momenta Group Limited our business arm which will have a focus on creating profit through business activities to fund and support the development of Momenta’s programme and social change work. I look forward to bringing you more information on this and other developments soon.
